The backbone of progression in Sea of Thieves lies with its Trading Companies. These factions offer voyages, purchase your hard-earned loot, and reward your loyalty with exclusive cosmetics and titles as your reputation grows. Understanding how to interact with them is key to becoming a pirate legend.

There are several primary Trading Companies, each with a distinct focus: the Gold Hoarders (treasure chests), the Order of Souls (skulls), and the Merchant Alliance (various goods and animals). As you deliver the appropriate loot to their representatives at outposts, your reputation with that company increases.

Beyond these core three, other factions exist, such as the Hunter's Call (fish and cooked meat), Athena's Fortune (Athena's Treasures), and the Bilge Rats (seasonal and event-based content). Each offers unique ways to earn rewards and progress.

Increasing your reputation unlocks higher-level voyages, which typically offer more challenging content and greater rewards. At certain reputation milestones, you'll also unlock access to special items and cosmetic rewards that reflect your dedication to that company.

The concept of 'Distinctions' was introduced to allow for continued progression beyond the initial level cap (often level 50 or 100). Earning a Distinction resets your reputation with a company to level 1, but grants you a prestigious reward and allows you to continue earning further distinctions and their associated accolades.

Emissary status is a crucial mechanic for boosting reputation gains. By raising an Emissary Flag for a Trading Company, you gain a multiplier on the reputation you earn from selling loot. However, Emissaries are also marked on the map, making them a target for other players seeking to sink them and claim their loot.

Strategic engagement with Trading Companies is vital. Diversifying your voyages across different companies can lead to a more balanced progression and a wider array of rewards. Understanding which company offers the best return for your efforts at any given time is a key aspect of efficient pirate play.
